Wedding Music vol 06 : Reception

With this installment of my reception background music we shall begin moving farther into the territory of “You really played that at your wedding?”  Granted, some of these songs aren’t typical wedding fodder, but they are all amazing songs.  They also all fit the mood of singer songwriter music that is both interesting and captivating while also being of a similar aural aesthetic.

Enjoy the music.  I know I did.  One of the greatest comments I received throughout my wedding and reception was a frequently repeated phrase, “This music is really good.”  It gave an already amazing day an even more special shine.

mp3 : Josh Ritter – The Temptation of Adam
mp3 : Simon and Garfunkel – Bleeker Street
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens – Chicago (Acoustic, Live at KCRW)
mp3 : The Weakerthans – Left and Leaving

Wedding Music vol 05 : Reception

And so continues the seemingly never ending posts about my wedding.  For those new to this series I have been posting the entire list of music that my wife and I painstakingly pieced together for our wedding.  I started with the Ceremony and now I’m posting my way through the Reception.  The background music for the cocktails and dinner was a list that was left completely up to me and I decided to mash together a massive load of my favorite music (with little regard to era, style, genre, etc.)

Some of this music hails from my childhood memories of long drives in the family van.  Others hail from my high school days where one great teacher let us rotate between the classic rock radio station and the greatest hits of John Denver or Styx while we worked on computers.  Other songs in this selection come from more contemporary sources.  The bottom line is that I enjoy every song.

mp3 : John Denver – Take Me Home, Country Roads
mp3 : The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You
mp3 : Bob Marley and the Wailers – Redemption Song
mp3 : Bob Dylan – Blowin’ In The Wind

Wedding Music vol 04 : Reception

And so it continues, the endless supply of awesome songs that I was allowed to play at my wedding.  This section, played as background music during the cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dinner at our reception, was left entirely up to me to arrange.  To keep the list coherent I gave my self a few limiting factors.  Mostly all of the songs conform to the following criteria; a) songs must be music I would be willing to admit I listen to and enjoy, b) most of the music is to be by singer-songwriters, c) the music needs to span a variety of artists, eras, and genres so that literally everyone at the reception will hear at least one song they recognize, and d) all of the songs must sit well in the background of dinner, drinks, and conversations.

In the end I was thrilled with these songs.  I was ecstatic.  After going back and forth over literally every song we played for our dance section of the reception (an upcoming post series) it was really fun to be given complete freedom to play whatever songs I desired.  Listening through this list today there are still some tracks that jump out and beg the question, “You played that track at your wedding?”  Well of course I did, it’s a great song.

mp3 : Andy Williams – Happy Heart
mp3 : Radiohead – Fog (Again) (Live)
mp3 : Dean Martin – I’ll Always Love You
mp3 : Donovan – Catch The Wind

There are 34 songs, just over 2 hours of music, that make up the entire backdrop to our reception.  Stay tuned for the remainder of these volumes.  If you would like to see all posts about my wedding music  click here.

Wedding Music vol 03 : Ceremony

And so the Wedding Music posts continue (with plenty more to come).  After this volume the rest of the music is pretty much a mix tape filled with awesome.  During the ceremony we linked together songs that all had a similar tone and vibe and built upon the theme of a traditional yet contemporary ceremony.  Hence the use of Vitamin String Quartet and other modern acts.

In this final Ceremony volume there are four tracks that were played while the guests were being dismissed from the church.  We probably could have added another track into this time, but it didn’t seem necessary and it was background music anyway.

Wedding Music vol 02 : Ceremony

This is volume 02 of the Wedding Music series.  As stated before much of this list was an exercise in compromise between my wife and I.  Ultimately I was very happy with the music we came up with (and that might be because she gave me complete free reign for background music at the reception.  Stay tuned for those posts).

Below are the tracks that we used during the actual ceremony.  At one point in time we were going to have a live string quartet play songs during the wedding, but we couldn’t find proper sheet music for the songs we wanted and it became too much of a hassle to have a quartet learn all of this music by ear.  We did have a piano player play a song live during the ceremony, but I don’t have a recording of that.

mp3 : Pride and Prejudice – The Secret Life of Daydreams
mp3 : Pride and Prejudice – Dawn
mp3 : Vitamin String Quartet – Yellow (Coldplay Cover)
mp3 : Vitamin String Quartet – Hoppipolla (Sigur Ros Cover)
mp3 : Coldplay – Lovers In Japan (Osaka Sun Mix)

Lovers in Japan is the track that we used to exit from the church where we were married.  The Vitamin String Quartet songs are from an ever rotating, ever evolving, ever amazing group on the west coast that continues to provide excellent string quartet interpretations of influential modern music.  They claim on their website that they will be offering sheet music in the future, but at the time of our wedding the best we could find was audio tracks (fortunately the church had a great sound system and decent acoustics).

Wedding Music vol 01 : Ceremony

I have now been married almost four months. And as evidence that married life directly affects the amount of free time a person has I submit this blog post. It has been four months and I am just now getting around to posting the music that I played at my wedding.

As with almost every decision that surrounds a wedding (and a healthy marriage) a great deal of compromise went into this list of songs. At certain points in the list (and I will make sure to point them out) I was given free reign over the music we selected. At other (most) points, it was a compromise between my wife and I and as such not every carefully selected track will seamlessly fit into the pages of The World Forgot. Such is life.

This will be a series of posts. Possibly taking most of this month to finish. Most of this series will involve more music and less words. Get excited.

Before the ceremony, while the guests were being seated, we decided that we wanted to play some background music. These are the six songs that were chosen (mostly by my wife).

mp3 : Alexi Murdoch – Orange Sky
mp3 : Shawn McDonald – Beautiful
mp3 : The Beatles – Let It Be
mp3 : Israel K – Somewhere Over the Rainbow
mp3 : Lior – This Old Love
mp3 : Peter Gabriel – Book of Love

You can argue in the comments as to which songs I was thrilled about and as to which songs I went along with because I love my wife and I wanted her to be happy. You can read the entire series here.
