Metric covers The Strokes and Bob Dylan

I’ve been absent from this hallowed hall for far too long now.  I do apologize, but I’ve been busy.  I’m attempting to cobble together a massive playlist for an upcoming wedding reception and that (along with the latest album from The National) has monopolized most of my music listening time.

Fortunately I stole some time back over this past week to listen to a handful of random songs strewn about here and there on the web.  Even more fortunately for all of us I stumbled upon two covers that Metric have done that are worth a listen.

mp3 : Metric – Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan Cover)
mp3 : Metric – The End Has No End (The Strokes Cover)

The Strokes cover is especially nice.

  1. Side Note… Billy, last night I saw The National @ DAR Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. and it was absolutely magical. Matt Berninger just about brought the hall down during the encore when he climbed into the upper deck with his corded microphone in tow. They played the perfect mix of old and new. Their show is a must-see!

  2. @Andy – i’ve seen The National live twice. both times at music festivals. both times they were brilliant and deserved more than their slotted time on stage. i wholly second the recommendation to see them live; it is a spectacle.

  3. Billy,

I think you have a refined music sense, and if you are still looking for some old smashing hits, why not try the ‘Stairway to Heaven’. That takes you from the earth to heaven. Don’t you think so?

  4. Hey since you are putting together a big playlist have you tried using Amazon’s new cloud-based MP3 capabilities? In case you want to share your playlist with guests, get new song ideas, get feedback, etc … it might be something to look into.

  5. @MikeMandelHypnosis,

Thanks for reminding us of the Amazon option. The Amazon name is so big I often forget about it, it’s so much more than books and CDs these days. Their modern services such as S3 and the could-based MP3 service are always worth bearing in mind.

  6. Billy, you’re right. The Strokes cover is great. Have been listening to it a few times now. Thanks for sharing.

  7. I have to side with the Dylan cover. But then I’m a bit biased being a massive Dylan fan since college. Metric does a nice job with the cover. Dylan will be fodder for covers for years and I welcome it. Sure, Dylan is great, but he’s like Leonard Cohen in that many of the covers of his work are better. Metric gets close to bettering Dylan.

  8. I happen to agree with Steven. Dylan is the man! But you know what they say, imitation is a form of flattery. So I’m guessing a cover is somewhat a tribute or homage to Dylan.

  9. These covers are actually very good – I like them. Usually the covers mess up the original because those who do the covers don’t really know what to do with them and it’s cool that some of them are good.
